Birds Hill Park

A Beach Retreat at the City’s Edge

Birds Hill Provincial Park is located approximately 30km northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba. In 1967 an artificial lake and beach was built in the park to provide a summer get away, with convenient access from Winnipeg.

The lake has been popular in recent years, with 5,000-10,000 beachfront visitors per day in summer months.

The water quality of the lake had been on a steady decline due to increased sediment. Beach amenities were also becoming rundown and were unable to meet the demand of this popular destination. SMM partnered with KGS Group to prepare a unified vision plan for the lake, which included improving all aspects of lake operations and water quality, as well as upgrading amenities to enhance the overall visitor experience and access to the west beach.

Based on a strategy for wayfinding and a walkability analysis, our team proposed to expand the lake and beach as a means to accommodate for growing visitors. Improvements have been made to parking lots, beach entries, signage, play equipment, as well as the walking and active transportation pathways in order to provide fluid wayfinding throughout the site.
