In the heart of Winnipeg’s Exchange District National Historic Site, Old Market Square is a pivotal destination and gathering place for the city. This small but dynamic open space is heavily used by Winnipeggers through out the year; in summer it is host to some of Winnipeg’s most successful festivals including the Winnipeg Fringe and Jazz Festivals.
Scatliff+Miller+Murray developed a master plan for Old Market Square that features a stylish and functional performance space, a sunken event lawn, serpentine seating wall and seating planters encircling large elms which surround the space to protect and extend the lives of the majestic trees. Dramatic lighting extends the life of the park by creating a more comfortable atmosphere into the evening hours. Each site element has been designed to be flexible and accommodates a variety of uses and events. The design of Old Market Square puts people first, and respects both the historical and cultural context of the park and sets a precedent nationally and internationally for the development of a public space within a heritage district.
